As per MarkT’s request here is a brief overview of our New Years Day
boardgaming marathon…

Last Night on Earth: We started about 10:45 in the morning with my
wife’s favorite game of all time. The Scenario was one in which all
21 zombies are in play and they don’t have to roll to respawn – thus
they spawn on every game turn. Their objective: Fill every building
space with zombies (with no heroes occupying the building) and
collapse the building. When they have collapsed 6 buildings they win
the game. My brothers (Nate and Greg) played the zombies and Melin
and I were the heroes.

Even though the heroes started with more cards and got a free search
in each building weapons were in short supply. Our only saving grace
was a “remains in play” card could stay on a law enforcement officer
that gives a +1 in combat AND on gun rolls – essentially meaning the
pistol could never run out of ammo. This was done to good effect but
one gun and three other heroes without weapons doesn’t make for a good
defense.

Two of my heroes went down quickly – even the prom queen who failed
EVERY hide roll. We WERE doing good at holding the zombies out of the
houses although they were around several of them we were able to keep
them at bay…

Then the zombies played a card that let them (at the start of their
turn) move 1d6 zombies one space in addition to their normal move. We
had no means of stopping it (actually we did have a chance with the
Father’s ability but we neglected to remember that) and low and behold
a 6 was rolled. This would end up being a game changing roll as
suddenly with that extra move space they were able to fill FOUR
additional buildings (the heroes were maneuvering to stop it for the
following turn). Suddenly FIVE buildings were destroyed. With a
concentration of 21 zombies and only a few buildings to choose from
the heroes could simply NOT hold off mobs like that and died
attempting to keep the buildings clear.

Dominion: We opted next to do something a bit lighter and went with
Dominion. I chose the “interactive” setup which has a lot of the
attack cards in it. The game played VERY differently that it had in
my previous games and the moat cards were gone within 3 game turns as
people realized they would be valuable against such cards as the
thief, spy and a couple of other attack cards. At first the attacks
failed but as they decks become more full and the moat cards couldn’t
be guaranteed in every hand things got interesting. Nathan took the
brunt of the loss however as he NEVER seemed to have his moat card at
the time Greg played the thief and he lost 5-6 copper though such
losses. Melin started out strong and got some lucky draws and was
able to purchase the 6 point victory cards pretty quickly – but then
her luck ran out and she could rarely get the 9 gold necessary to
purchase another and she concentrated more on those while Greg and I
purchased the 3 point buildings which were soon wiped out. I was able
to amass some decent gold by then and purchased 4 of the 6 point
buildings. The last one never sold as the game end condition occurred
as the third stack was emptied. I ended up winning by 7 victory
points.

Bob (NinjaBob) showed up around 2:00 and watched the last of our
dominion game and expressed interest in BattleStar Galactica. As some
of you know I have been anxious to get in a full game. I had tried
twice before – the first time we had the game set up and I was
explaining the rules and one of Melin’s relatives showed up and after
2 hours I gave up and packed it away. The second time was with UCBGA
and there simply wasn’t enough time to finish the game. My time had
come.

Battlestar Galactica: There is an assumption that people have begun
to make whenever we play a game involving a traitor – and that is that
more than likely it is me. Sure enough the cards were passed out and
I was a Cylon. I was also President. Bob and Melin chose Pilots,
Nate was the Admiral and Greg chose the support role. I decided to
play it pretty low key and did positive things (although taking the
lesser of the better options I had available to me).

As fate would have it an event came up that allowed my friend Bob to
look at the loyalty card of someone at the table – and wouldn’t you
know it but he decided to look at mine. Before I had clarified the
rules Bob kind of showed us the tell he would give if he ever found a
Cylon (at that time we thought you couldn’t say it out loud). We
later clarified that rule and as he looked at my card he immediately
gave the tell.

Well – I didn’t have much choice but to accuse him of being a big liar
and I immediately went about trying to point out things that he did
that were suspect – even going so far as to say that I thought both he
AND Nathan were cylons (there were two in the deck for distribution)
and that Nate was choosing poor distance cards whenever we jumped.
Although I had them bluffed for a turn or two eventually my wife
(curse wives and their ability to read their husbands!) started to
lean towards me being the cylon.

On my next turn I attempted to throw Bob in the Brig telling everyone
at the table that it was, in fact, Bob and not me. The check failed
and Bob escaped his fate – but then immediately did the same thing to
me and I failed the check and found myself in the brig. I revealed
myself and started doing what I could to thwart humanity.

On the next jump they made it halfway and a new set of loyalty cards
were distributed. Greg ended up going Cylon this time and went a turn
or two before it people started to suspect him and he revealed himself
as well.

We were on the LAST jump – they had gone 8 distance and only needed to
make one more jump to win and they were only one turn from the FTL
jump that would take three population. They only had three population
so they would need to get through one more turn and be in the clear.

Then Greg played his super Cylon card that pretty much FILLED the
board with ships (4 heavy raiders, 10 raiders and two basestars) AND
moved them back two on the jump track. Suddenly they were in a losing
position having been so close up to that point. I had an event card
that let me throw Starbuck in the brig (Melin) and we were able to
keep her there the rest of the game. The lone pilot Bob could not
hold off the masses and Greg and I activated the heavy raiders every
chance we got and, although they shot one down, there were just enough
left to board and win us the game.

Cylons win.

I had a BLAST with this game and would love to play it again some
time.

This took us to 6:00 in the evening and Bob had to leave so we wrapped
up the night with a couple of quick games of Red Dragon Inn – one of
the light filler games I prefer.

I am now done yapping…
