So… here is the difference in being the kind of person that suffers from the “cult of the new” syndrome. I actually OWN 50 games that qualify under Ran’s system to be considered “guaranteed bad” (Bayesian rating < 6.5 and average rating < 7.0). Due to being a bit of a collector I would consider any game in which I have rated a 7 or higher to be a keeper and I probably wouldn’t mind trading the others. Of those 50 games only 5 fall within my “keep” zone.
Shocking Roulette 7 Buccaneer 7 Poison 7 Ticket to Ride: Mystery Train Expansion 7 Cutthroat Caverns 7 I have only two games that land with a Bayesian of < 6.5 and an average > 7.0 and those are: Ace of Aces - Handy Rotary Deluxe Edition 6 6.12468 7.06841 Cutthroat Caverns: Deeper & Darker 6 6.26582 7.27587 I own 124 games that all average 6.5 or greater on the Bayesian. So next I figured I would see the ones that rated 6 or below for ME and that I wouldn’t mind trading away. That came to a total of 37 games. Mystery of the Abbey 5 ** Space Dealer 5 The Settlers of Catan Card Game 5 Dungeon Twister 5 ** Leonardo da Vinci 5 Attika 5 Carcassonne 5 Saboteur 6 ** Hoity Toity 6 Tempus 6 Niagara 6 ** Felix: The Cat in the Sack 6 O Zoo le Mio 6 ** Wasabi! 6 Star Wars: Epic Duels 6 * Bang! 6 ** A Touch of Evil, The Supernatural Game 6 Cleopatra and the Society of Architects 6 ** Lord of the Rings 6 Mykerinos 6 Hey! That's My Fish! 6 ** Arkadia 6 Hacienda 6 Nexus Ops 6 Santiago 6 Shadows over Camelot 6 ** Lost Cities 6 ** Maharaja: Palace Building in India 6 Lord of the Rings: The Confrontation 6 Hive 6 Ticket to Ride: Marklin Edition 6 In the Year of the Dragon 6 Notre Dame 6 The Settlers of Catan 6 ** Twilight Imperium 3rd Edition 6 Railroad Tycoon 6 ** Caylus 6 Tigris & Euphrates 6 ** Games I would still keep due to being a "game evangelist" (explained later) * Games I would keep simply due to collectibility That leaves me with 76 games that have a Bayesian of 6.5 or greater and that I rate a 7 or above. How depressing to realize that I out of 176 games I really only consider 43% of them as keepers. Ah well – I suppose that is what is to be expected from someone that suffers from my affliction. The only unique part to my scenario is that I consider myself a game evangelist – which means that although I may not personally LIKE some of the games in my collection I actually keep them there so that I can entertain others that probably wouldn’t enjoy ANYTHING I consider to be a 7 or above. I am not particular to party games but I have several for those that enjoy the lighter side. Interesting exercise Ran. Thanks.
