I really didn't have time to look into it deeply, but DHCP was unable to get an IP when booted on 2.6.26.x on Intel PCI-E gigabit controller so I knew something was terrible wrong. However when I researched it, I found many reports of linux 2.6.26.x and 2.6.27 permanently destroying Intel NIC's by overwriting NVRAM. As soon as I stopped immediately and downgraded in fear that my NICs were ruined. Luckily they were OK.
