I really didn't have time to look into it deeply, but DHCP was unable to get 
an IP when booted on 2.6.26.x on Intel PCI-E gigabit controller so I knew 
something was terrible wrong.

However when I researched it, I found many reports of linux 2.6.26.x and 
2.6.27 permanently destroying Intel NIC's by overwriting NVRAM.  As soon as 
I stopped immediately and downgraded in fear that my NICs were ruined.  
Luckily they were OK.
