Im not familiar with virtualbox, but it will certainly make things easier for 
many people.
And that is what we want, more users capable of compiling, building
and making their own adaptions. 

Good idea, I will try if I can help.
(I want to replace vmware-workstation anyways, so why not virtualbox)

Thinking more about it, the vm environment should not be that important if 
the installation and files are scripted. 
A real machine will do it just as well.

heh, we can even deliver a nearly-ready-to-use unattended server with
a samba share (the user must provide the proprietary bits).

but, first start with a working build environment. :-)
