Having a virtual machine that people can play with it allows them it 
modify and fix wherever they feel and contribute to the main distribution.

I have a virtual machine with debian etch that compiles just fine. My 
only trouble would be where to host it it is a huge file.

my gut feeling is that making a virtual machine allows more people to 
build their own version of unattended without knowing the underline 
system so it would be rather strange that with that lack of knowledge 
they will contribute it back ( I hope that it did not sound too sceptic)
