We use 3c905C-TXM network cards almost exclusively (about 30), the Linux bootdisk worked fine for about a year. There is currently a problem with smbmount hanging (with both 4.6 and 4.7pre, if I run smbmount by hand or try with identical hardware at home it works fine), but this doesn't seem to be NIC related. I never tried the 3c905B variant (since these don't support PXE I never use them in workstations). I believe the 3c905B has been sold for at least five years, there may be minor differences between newer/older versions. Whatever the problem was, I'm glad you solved it.
