How about using a simple "G" with "COMBINING LONG VERTICAL LINE OVERLAY"
U+20D2 or "COMBINING DOUBLE VERTICAL STROKE OVERLAY" U+20E6 ?
(also usable for dollar and other currency symbols).
Better to encode the character. We don't decompose the dollar sign.
