You probably are aware of this, but since you mentioned that you were
unhappy with the shifting characteristics, this sounds like it may be
the culprit. I do NOT know what you mean by "shift hard". There is a
velvet drive manual on our forums website under "files" at the bottom.

On page 24 there is a picture of the drain plug, which has a stainless
steel screen. When I removed it from my olde Owens, it looked like a
short napped carpet was covering it. Cleaning it with diesel fuel got
rid of all the mouse hair, which I surmised was clutch facing. The
reason I even got there, was inability to reliably get into gear.
Shifting requires hydraulic pressure, and if it is restricted, can
prevent changing gears. Hope this helps.
It most certainly will if you find your transmission on your garage
