Hey JIM:
I didn't say it was gonna be a piece of cake. giggle I pumped out from
the top, to mitigate the "bilge wash" with atf. I put a cake pan under
the tranny before loosening the drain plug assembly, then prepared to
pump it out. Smell the old atf, and you can tell if it has been burnt.
The metal in the sample tells me that the clutch faceings might be
gone. Hope not. I don't think the oil strainer screen came out
willingly. By now you have 3 cracked ribs, so have someone pull you
out. . . alright back at it. . . If you grabbed the screen, and plug
on the way out, get them clean enough to eat. Talk the guy that pulled
you out into diving in, and inserting screen, and plug. Not torquing
it yet. You can now fill, and then pump, and drain, as before. Clean
them again, and now it is your turn unless you had a 24 pack, then
volunteer someone else. Torque it this time. Now you said you are on
the hard. Welll we are gonna run the engine. You will need a 55 gal
drum set underneath the exhaust, a sump pump, a hose hookup, or a T in
the sump pump output. Connect the sump output to the engine water
thruhull hose, using necessary sizeing hardware. We will need to
direct the hose on the cutlass bearing only when in gear, which will
be of SHORT durations. Fill up the drum, turn on the pump, Fire up the
engine in neutral. Have the outside hose guy let you know about water
from the exhaust going back into the barrel. Keep your eye on the temp
gauge. If all is stable holler that you are gonna shift. Wait for
acknowledgment before doing so. You should hop right into gear. You
will know if you have to remove the tranny or not. I have 2 55 gal
and one 35 gal drum behind my boat just waiting for me to get my
engines straightened out.Good luck, and best wishes to you.
