Perhaps state troopers in some states care more than others, but here
in Florida they don't seem to care at all. The DOT might, but those
guys aren't too frequently encountered, and I have NEVER interacted
with one, only saw them on the road (usually at weigh stations, which
you can pass right by). I wouldn't hesitate to take such a trip,
assuming that if you got pulled over it would only be a ticket and
they wouldn't turn you around and send you home or somehow else
prevent you from continuing on your trip.

I would love to take my boat out to lake Tahoe and also South Cali.
Pacific, but for the fuel I would burn I could fly out there and rent
a boat.

I don't know what to tell you, but personally I am far more concerned
with some dumbass getting in front of me and slamming on the brakes
than I am about official regulations in terms of getting pulled over.
I see lots and lots of horse trailers that must weigh as much and are
just as tall as my boat, but perhaps not as wide.
