Hello Gentlemen,
I also have a 42 aft cabin with the same gen set. Removing it in pieces is probably the best approach on that. As far as replacement, here's a whole different idea. This may sound nuts but rather than installing another gen-set in the engine room (where incidentally it adds list to your port side) many cruisers and weekenders are using portable generators on deck. They're less expensive, can be stored in your garage when not in use, use the same fuel as your dinghy, adds room in your engine room to service your engines, can be plugged into you existing shore power plug and stowed practically anywhere on the outside of your boat, are very quiet while running (thus not disturbing your neighbors at anchor) and eliminate the port list that all our boats have. David, ? My gen. set is also on the port side fwd. of the port engine but my water heater is below the floor in the galley area. The gen. set is right up against the fwd bulkhead on the port side. The stairs down to the galley raise up for?access to the engine room. Access isn't as much a problem as the weight of the old Onan. I think it will have to be taken out in pieces. I think?it weighs about 650 to 700 lb. The new one "only" weighs 360 lb plus the sound shield. I'm an old guy and can't do the heavy lifting that this will require. ? Bob C. ? ? I don't know the configuration of you 42, but in mine the Genset is in the engine room on the port side near the forward bulkhead.? The water heater is outboard of the Onan.? Changing the water heater was a bear and while that was going on I figured that if I ever change out the genset, I would make the stairs, those going down to the galley from the salon, open.? Or at least remove the stairs during the genset swap.? My genset is right next to the under side of the stairs.? Is yours similar?? Have you considered this method? I have a 7.5kW Onan MDJE that is flat worn out and am going to have a Yanmar 7 kW installed. I have a 42 ft. aft cabin and it's going to be a real bear to get it replaced. Any thoughts on this and approximately how long did it take? ? Thanks, ? Bob C. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "UnifliteWorld" group.
