I grew up in Argentina, where on-demand heaters are the norm. I really like them and I tried to get one here but the cost is outrageous; perhaps you would save enough in gas over the life of the heater to come out ahead. I think they are a particularly good idea if you have a very large house and you are planning to install more than one, close to the demand points; otherwise you would be heating up a lot of pipe! They are ideal for an apartment building, where you would have one in each apartment. If you have a large house and you are planning to install just one it may not be such a good idea; you certainly would not get the full benefit of the device. I have no experience with the units available in this country. I don't know if they are more or less sensitive to hard water than a regular tank heater, but that is a question worth asking if your area has hard water.
