I grew up in Argentina, where on-demand heaters are the norm. I really
like them and I tried to get one here but the cost is outrageous;
perhaps you would save enough in gas over the life of the heater to come
out ahead. I think they are a particularly good idea if you have a very
large house and you are planning to install more than one, close to the
demand points; otherwise you would be heating up a lot of pipe! They
are ideal for an apartment building, where you would have one in each
apartment. If you have a large house and you are planning to install
just one it may not be such a good idea; you certainly would not get the
full benefit of the device. I have no experience with the units
available in this country. I don't know if they are more or less
sensitive to hard water than a regular tank heater, but that is a
question worth asking if your area has hard water.
