I could be wrong, but I think the vast majority of folks on the list
appreciate referals/ opinions/ evaluations/ insights/ warnings/
recomendations etc. about businesses, services, tradespeople,
restaurants, whatever (especially if it's local). "Close At Hand" is
simply a local "yellow pages" -- possibly a good place to start, but it
should certainly not be your only source. Its information is easily/often
outdated, and there certainly is no evaluation given (or intended) for
businesses listed.

What you regard as "nervous chatter" is what many of us on the list
regard as its most worthwhile feature. Google or Close at Hand is not
going to give anyone insight into, say, the best cell phone coverage in our
area, or the best oil prices available, or carpenters, plumbers, etc who
are recomended by locals. [All of these are topics that have been addressed
on the list.] Are you going to choose your doctor via Google? I don't
think so. I guess I'm in favor of INCREASING what you call "nervous
chatter" on this listserve.

While I'm at it: Here's some nervous chatter about INSURANCE. I'd like to
hear more opinion/ recomendations about insurance companies (home-owner,
fire, auto). My insurance in all these areas has skyrocketed in the past
year. The previous posts have been helpful. Let's have more.

FYI: I found Unitrin Direct Ins. Co. could provide (by far) the best rate
for auto insurance (a California company). Find them on the web. They
currently do not write any other type of insurance in PA, tho. I am
currently looking into home-owner's and fire ins. (for rental property),
and would like to bundle them all with the same company - including auto-
to obtain a discount. Any info from others -- including bad experiences,
would be great. (Please post to the list.) Property insurance is a lot
more complicated than auto ins., with many more variations in the details/
requirements for each company.

I also think most of us want to know about porch sales, special items
available (old doors, clawfoot tubs, pedestal sinks, etc.), local
restaurant specials, DeSales events, special concerts/plays,fund-raisers,
etc. That's what a community bulletin board is supposed to do-- keep us
informed of local news/events/happenings/ opinion/ politics/commerce/
missing pets/ pets needing a good home, etc.

As has been said before, if you are not interested in a particular posting,
you can easily delete it before reading it.

Just my opinion,
Neil Lifson
