I have been a very silent member of this list for a long time. However, I would like to break my silence with my wholehearted agreement with Elisabeth's opinion and rationale - I also enthusiastically support the proposed dog run in Clark Park. It is a sensible use of a space that is underutilized.
In my opinion, the northern section of Clark Park is grossly underutilized - the point of an urban park like this is _not_ for a quiet moment to commune with nature -- if you want that, you go to Fairmount Park or the Wissahickon. In my opinion, the most successful of the 'square' parks in Philadelphia is Rittenhouse Square, and its success lies in the social aspect of the park. The lunchtime and weekend population of the park is amazing, with kids, babies, parents, strollers, dogs, bike messengers, professionals, contractors, students & c, and provides a pleasant, vibrant, urban experience. I think that the dog run in Clark Park would add significantly to the social aspect of the park (and I don't mean for the dogs, I mean for the people). Although there is a private dog run on Chester (?), I don't go to it because it is a different social experience (not because I am too lazy to walk there, for the record), and not in the good way. Clark Park's unofficial dog run is much more fun, despite my visions of trolleys killing rogue puppies. We already have a non-public dog run a bit farther west. I don't understand Ray's logic below because child owners do not pay to use the tot lot, and no one pays to use the park in general. For the record, I am enthusiastically for the public dog run. I say this without extensive qualification because I believe it will be attractive, that it will give life to a part of the park that is not greatly utilized, and that it will solve much of the off-leash problem while creating a nice social environment for people (and dogs). I believe that it will not detract from the park, but that it will add. This is my gut feeling and my opinion; please do not flame me.
