Hello Tony Dominick I am not professing to read your or anyone else¹s mind as to why people joined the UC Neighbors list. I am recalling statements posted here publicly why those who wanted to form the second list and then did just that.
Some of the monikers you have mentioned here came from exchanges between certain founding members of UCNeighbors List and some on this listserv. Not all of it was in self-defense by a LONG shot. Your reference to whining and complaining leads to the assertion I made earlier: ³It eventually came down to some us actually love everything Univ. of PA. is doing here and stand to benefit from it personally or professionally. Others see a re-vamping of the neighborhood and displacement of its long time residents; especially people of color and are battle-scarred from attacks and other negative experiences with the institution.² Those who were not gung-ho about certain issues such as the UCD, BID and other Penn initiatives were labeled as whiners, cranks, complainers etc. My point is those who originally formed the UCNeighbors listserv did so because they did not want to hear arguments from people who continually disagreed with their view of how this community should evolve and wanted a means to block and censure those they deemed unwanted/unfit for their new listserv, which in and of itself is a form of hostility. It seems to suggest that some of us neighbors are superior to others. I don¹t know WHAT people have been told about this list, but I am here to testify that attacks and snide comments also came from those who formed the listserv. Your comments about sarcasm etc. actually fits along those lines. I am glad you enjoy the different points of view raised on this listserv and continue to do so. However, your closing sentences implies that you would read this listserv for your personal amusement as we were laughing stocks and not neighbors with opinions.
