OK. I copied some of the .m3u files onto a native Linux partition.  Slim
still didn't pick them up, but now I undersand why.  They consist of
strings that look like this:
"F:\My Music\Jazz\John Coltrane..." so they don't mean much under the
Linux file system.  I'm going to have to rebuild them or convert them,
somehow.

I haven't got any further with the other thing.  Downloaded
sqlitebrowser, but it requires QT, or some elements of QT, which in my
case I have not got.  I'll need to look into that some more. 

Anyway, thanks for the suggestions.  Definitely moving forward.
