there's nothing concise and "good" out there. There the kurobox forums where you can go and read for hours about the different distros that you can put on this box and still not have a good idea of what to do. As someone who knows a bit about linux, I was torn between three different paths when I rebuilt my kurobox. There are some howtos for simple tasks, but nothing that guides you from opening the box to having it all configured like you'd like.
Honestly, the original Kuro is on the ragged edge of being powerful enough for the squeezebox. If you have room, you may want to consider a barebones normal sized PC, you'll have an easier time of it I suspect. I already had the kuro, and have been using it for backups so it was a no-brainer to use it for serving FLAC's. But if I had nothing, I'd build a normal PC into a little linux server and stick it beside the furnace. It may be cheaper in the long run too, maybe one of those ghetto Dell $299 jobbies?
