Welcome to linux land. Distros do very by a bit. Just a quick rundown
since this really isn't the place...

RPM is Redhat Package Manager (sort of a standard). Lots of distro
(distributions) are based off RedHat.

Ubuntu is based of Debian which some would argue is better.

LFS or Linux From Scratch is the Do It Yourself variety. You'll find
lots of help easily for Debian and RedHat based systems.

FYI, when searching include your distro name in the search ("install on
Ubuntu" for example) to find the most relevant results.
