I looked at this, and ended up getting a noisy windows box (to run one
other program that I need). I do run it headless in a different room,
but the noise bugs me - and I'm sure it's not very green. I wish I had
just got a macmini.

It is perhaps a bit more expensive (or get used). Advantages:
-stable and virus free.
-straightforward management.
-use bog-standard hardware and solutions (keyboard, VNC for headless,
external drives over USB or firewire, SAMBA/windows sharing to share,
etc).
-small, unobtrusive, low-power, sleeps without difficulty, very quiet,
more than fast enough.
-all your usual linux stuff when needed, but hidden most of the time.
