I have come across something that looks quite promising if you're in for
a lightweight distro:
http://www.puppylinux.com/

I have never tried it myself, but this seems interesting, some
highligths:
- Live distro may load completely into RAM, without accessing CD, may
save session data to Hard drive
- May install on virtually any type of storage device (usb stick, hdd,
memory card...)
- It's got it's own package manager, called... Yeah right: PET, but
also supports .deb

This looks promising for older machines with slower CPU's
