The command line can be a bit daunting few first time Linux users but there are a lot of books on the subject and knowledgeable people out there. I would recommend a very common Linux distribution like Ubuntu or Fedora. That way if you have problems answers should be easy to come by. You could also try a prebuilt ditro that sets everything up for you like VortexBox. That way you can get started quickly but you are still using a standard Linux distro if you want to dive deeper and modify things.
