Have you given up on Clarke Connect?

I use ubuntu server 8.10 successfully on an old P2 266Mhz processor
(see my signature). I would recommend this if you are running headless
- you don't need all the extras provided by a desktop version.  You can
use Webmin to manage  the server.  I also use WinSCP over SSH to manage
file transfers.
