FWIW, with various releases of Ubuntu on which I've run SS and SC, I
found 32-bit Desktop to be the most stable, with the fewest
"challenges".  And after trying out several candidates for remote
machine management, I found NoMachines' NX Server and Client (the free
versions of each) to be the most flexible and useful.  There are
concise installation instructions for NX on Ubuntu online if you google
for them.
