Squeezecenter is just a server, it can't play anything itself. If you want to use software players, you have three choices that I'm aware of - SoftSqueeze, Squeezeslave and Squeezeplay. The first is Java and provided you have sunjava installed you should be able to webstart it from any machine via the SC web interface. Squeezeslave is command line only but works well, and Squezeplay is the new replacement for Squeezeslave which is still in beta but might be worth trying out.
