Well I haven't given up yet, but still having the same issue described in the first post.
I did get squeezecenter installed (or re-installed) in this case by setting up a local .deb repository with the squeezecenter .deb using some of the instructions published here: http://www.planetoss.com/detail.php?id=13 Basically, I set up a local repository and renamed the folder containing Packages.gz to binary-lpia and then Synaptic Program Manager could find squeezecenter to install. Now, I have squeezecenter installed but I still get the 5 second, "died. Restarting." error. I'm guessing now that I might have some dependency or supporting program issues? On some thread somewhere I found a command line that seems to get additional log detail, although I don't know exactly what the command does: sudo -u squeezecenter /usr/sbin/squeezecenter-server --debug d_startup --diag --verbose I will list in the following posts the output. I don't know exactly what this is telling me, but it would appear there are some MYSQL modules that aren't loading? Any suggestions on what to do next? Do I need to manually install some MYSQL programs? Once again any help is greatly appreciated...I wish I could interpret more of this myself, but anything I do would be guesswork...
