maybe I'd have done it the same way, but I didn't know that a SORTNAME tag
exists. Come to think of it, maybe instead of removing those tags I should
fix the ones that follow the pattern "first last". I'll have to think of
it before I tackle my huge collection.
Seems the SORTNAME can have any prefix like in my case, if there are any,
they are from musicbrainz, i.e. MUSICBRAINZ_SORTNAME.

The locale setting for my normal user is correct, it must be a problem with
the special squeezeboxserver user. But I've fixed it now by adding
export LANG=en_US.UTF-8
to the squeezeboxserver script in init.d
Then I ran "clear library and rescan" and everything looks good now
(for a small test tree that is).

One more question. Should I report this somewhere? Cause my first attempt
to ask the logitech support was rather futile.
As I've said their answer was to remove all special chars and then they
closed the problem report.
