Oh, I must have missed the memo: since when did stat() get deprecated
as a 'generic call' and what replaces it?

Applications should NOT have to jump through extra hoops in order to
simply read files with POSIX ACL's.  If they did, again, you would have
"firefox for systems with posix acls" etc: it is the job of the OS to do
this, NOT every application.
