You cite mysterious calls other than stat() but don't explain what they are and where they are used... You confuse your ACL setup by using NFS (you do know of course that user id's must be synced between client/server when using NFS, right?) and by using ACL's in general (most people agree that POSIX ACL's are difficult to do correctly, and generally only for masochists) and blame the applications....
