I got a basic (driverless) keyboard as you suggested, and your suspicion is confirmed. The hdmi blanks completely after 10 minutes of inactivity. It can be brought back to life by typing on the USB keyboard, or even prevented from blanking by regular use of the keyboard. I'll try installing jivelite when I get a chance.
