Assuming the bits are the same in front of the DAC (difficult to prove), there is more...
Different boards, power supplies, board layout, onboard power regulation and decoupling, USB connections, board features, noise footprints, grounding grid, firmware,... can make an obvious difference. It doesn't matter if you compare different boards or tweak one and the same board. E.g. I soldered additional buffer CAPs on my RPI B+ board and I'm using a very clean linear 5V power supply. Beside that I'm using a USB filter. Then I turn off HW features on the board as much as the firmware allows, e.g. HDMI on the RPI. My Cubitruck lets me turn off several more HW features (WLAN/Bluetooth/Audio/...). The changes on the powerrail noisefloor were easily measurable with my oscilloscope. Result on my system: More dynamics, less grain, cleaner sound. You could get the impression that the bits are not the same anymore. And somebody has turned up the volume. Enjoy. Triode.
