I am using MySQL for another app. Will SQLite coexist on the same host?

Of course. That's most likely what the vast majority of LMS/Linux installations is doing.

'locate' can find no insance of any server.log on the machine. There is
nothing new in /var/log. syslog & dmesg show nothing related.

By default (if running from the command line) the log files would be stored in a folder right where your slimserver.pl is stored.

Before you continue trying to build your own, let me say that 7.8 should come with all the binaries for i386-linux-thread-multi-64int (please check "perl -v"). 7.9 covers even more varieties. So you're probably best to check 7.9 first. Download the full tarball (NOT the noCPAN), extract it to some folder. Then run

./slimserver.pl --d_startup

Then post the output you get. All of it.
