Well its possible to make it work as it works fine for many of us on pi
and other much lower powered systems....

Have you tried forcing the output mode to 16 without mmap bits as you
are doing with aplay, use: "-a ::16:0"

Do you see any log statements at the time of the dropouts with -d
all=debug set?
