If you're still having trouble ...

I downloaded and used the SD formatter as recommended by Man in a van,
but it didn't help any.

When the pop-up asking to refresh the browser appeared, I pulled the
power on my Cubox, removed the ethernet cable, in the router settings I
deleted the Cubox from the DCHP list, re-connected ethernet and power to
my Cubox, when it booted I found it's IP address using "fing" app
(android), and opened a browser using the new IP address.  The install
resumed and completed phase 2. no problem. I went on to install LMS 7.9.

Everything working fine now.
