Regarding handling the music files on pCP.

Initially I also thought that samba would be the optimal solution to
update music files on an attached HDD - but I'm not so sure anymore.
pCP is build to be as lean as possible and the focus is always to
deliver the best sound quality on a RPi. So I think it might be
overdoing it to have samba running on pCP all the time for the rare
moments where you actually transfer music files to pCP.

If you only need to transfer files from time to time I think winscp
actually is a good way to do it.
In the figure below 2 shows the music files on the computer, 3 show the
music files on pCP and 1. show the possibility to use the synchronize
button which will automatically update new files/directories (you can
control direction from computer to pCP/or the other way/or both ways.)

It should even be possible to use winscp in a commandline function on
your computer where it will monitor your music catalog for changes. If a
change is detected winscp will automatically synchronize the files on
pCP.
This also have benefit that the music directory on your computer serves
as a sort of backup of the music files on the pCP. So if you fix any
MP3-tags on the monitored direcory on your computer, these fixes should
automatically turn up on the pCP.

I will advice that you try to install winscp on your computer and test
if it could be a suitable way to go.
