I don't necessarily want to start completely from scratch.
Just saw that Alpine is based around musl, rather than glibc. Which means that you'd have to build all binaries yourself. I'm not sure you want to go there. It's probably more reasonable to start with a minimalist Debian based system. Then pull down nightlies for your platform.
