Hi again,
Well, I had some time to spare this afternoon, so I pulled the G3
card (Powerlogix Powerforce G3/400 for those who have been following) out
of my 7600 server & stuck it back into the 7300.
What follows are the result of my tests trying to start OSX:

1 128MB DIMM / 4MB VRAM onboard video - 400MHz/50MHz bus no start
2 128MB DIMM / 4MB VRAM onboard video - 400MHz/50MHz bus no start
4 16MB DIMM / 4MB VRAM onboard video - 400MHz/50MHz bus no start

1 128MB DIMM / 2MB VRAM onboard video - 400MHz/50MHz bus no start
2 128MB DIMM / 2MB VRAM onboard video - 400MHz/50MHz bus no start
4 16MB DIMM / 2MB VRAM onboard video - 400MHz/50MHz bus no start

As mentioned, I am able to start OSX at the fastest speed of 260MHz
on the 40MHz bus & 250MHz on the 45MHz bus, but no faster. the symptoms are:

press power switch on keyboard - startup chime sounds, hard drive spins up,
monitor never comes on & no further drive activity.

If I reset the bus & processor speed on the G3 card to the 45MHz bus &
250MHz, same startup procedure, but monitor comes on & drive activity
starts, resulting in successful boot of OSX

I have yet to try the RAM from my 9600/200mp, but it wouldn't start
OSX at 400MHz/50MHz bus either - it's specs are 288MB RAM with standard
video card & the RAM is made up from 4 64MB DIMM & 1 32MB DIMM.

One unexpected, but very welcome side effect of this is, I have
stuck the original processor (200MHz 604e) card back in the 7300 with the
512k L2 cache & it now runs quite a bit more responsively under OSX - is it
possible that installing Ryan Rempel's cache enabler software for th4e G3
card in OSX & then leaving it run has a positive speed effect on OSX's
usage of the onboard cache? I didn't press the CUDA reset switch when I
refitted the 604e processor - that surely would make no difference.
I can't think of any more to try on this machine to get a
successful OSX boot at higher speeds opn the G3 card - any further
suggestions?

        Bye for now, Terry Allen
