First off it's not a hack to be looking for to improve 2D acceleration on the ATI video cards. It is official ATI firmware/software upgrades. One was issued in July I think it was. OS 9.x is much faster with this firmware upgrade not any noticeable difference in OSX. A new upgrade was just posted in OCT. It is said to also make a difference in OSX. I've not yet tried it waiting for the kinks to be worked out. Info can be found on www.xlr8yourmac.com. I upgraded from the ATI Rage Pro 8mb card to the ATI RAge Pro 128 orion 16mb card. I don't see much difference in speeds etc but I can now run Apples DVD player which you can't with the 8mb card. It depends on what you use your machine for. I would say if it's just general use and not a lot of video stuff your doing...you will be surprised at how well the old cards compare to the new ones. In short if I hadn't wanted the Apple DVD player to work I would have been fine with the old 8mb card. Some others have said the same of the ATI 7000 but you may feel differently.
