"built in usb" is actually not the real reason, which is even simpler: the version of the firmware is too old, and not upgradeable. If you have ever looked into running Linux on a beige G3, which I am in the middle of doing, you will discover that it is the last machine considered 'OldWorld' before the 'NewWorld' macs came out. All sort of hassles to get the bootloader and much more to work. Ask Google about Open Firmware and Beige G3's.

So, to kill the speculation: It is not about the USB!
