Just my 2 cents worth. I have just recently taken delivery of a G5 1.8 and whilst it is spectacularly fast at some things (including booting classic in around 15 seconds) it is very slow at finding devices on my network - at this point only being my old 9600 w G3 300 (not Mach 5 version) which runs OS9.1 or OS 10.2.6. So as others have said it's all relative.....

Now having said all of that, when I was running 10.2.6 on 9600 it was, as others say, very usable. My modem worked fine, USB.Firewire combo card worked fine, IDE CDRW faultless, ATI Radeon 7000 (not PCI extreemed) also work flawlessly driving an LG 17 inch LCD via DVI. Couple of bounces to load Office X but once running was great. Boot back into 9.1 and yes it was significantly faster. This also applies to is my B&W G3 450 at work.

Biggest thing to remmember is, we are running the very latest version of Apple's OS on Macs that are in some cases 6 or more years old - the fact that it works at all is a bloody miricle and testimont to the likes of Ryan who makes these things happen. Try running XP on anything less than a P4 and then see if we are hard done by!!!

If it's a really big issue stick to OS 9 or suck it in a cough up the dollars and by a fast G4 or a G5!!!!

Oh yeah, my G5 even talks to my Newton M2K via nsync via ethernet, yet another great peice of software engineering to keep old, but perhaps not redundant hardware useable and functional.
