Quoting "Daniel C." <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>:

Black Magic:

Rain Dancing:
http://www.catb.org/jargon/html/R/rain-dance.html (#2)

Neither term carries any connotation of ethicality (or lack thereof).

Hmm, isn't that funny. Thanks, I had no idea. I know I've definitely read tons of email using these phrases, and they were unquestionably describing shady ethics, and methods designed manipulate.

For me the interesting thing to note is that folks like Google actually list what you can do to have better results. Although it's certainly general at times, there's not a lot of mystery involved in doing what they're outlining and how to do it. When these phrases started, there were no guidelines. The days of lots of techniques working for some unknown reason are pretty much gone. The rewards are at best marginal, if not dangerous. The engines have matured too much for that, and they've seen every trick in the book. Be good, be relative, be unique, be popular.
