It was originally called market research (focus groups, consumer research, ...) 
and in the computer world it is called Business Intelligence (BI).  It has used 
to be called data mining.

Companies do pay for it and have for years.

(And I hope somebody said that you CAN'T manipulate colors in RGB and expect 
anything sane to come out of it.)
