I ran some simple tests today and found that there's no need to be bothered
with film aspect ratio to match the perspective with a photo. Just keep
aspect ratio of the "Current Camera" and Height/Width ratio under
"Resolution" in render settings to equal values and you'll mimmick a 35 mm
photo camera.
 
By resizing the viewport, or the picture size, you are able to render
outside the area that the real world camera shows but it won't change
anything to the perspective. In other words there is no direct relation
betweeen the picture size or picture aspect ratio and the lens angle in rs3d
camera settings.

You'll have to multiply the focal length from the exif data by a constant to
find the 35 mm equivalent. For my camera this constant is 3.93, probably
different for yours.
