Thanks for all the feedback guys. General concensus seems to be Nvidia rather than ATI (my experience also bears this out). In complex scenes though in shaded mode, or during rendering, even the Nvidia goes into a mad flickering frenzy if I try to do any editing. A recent update of the drivers has helped a bit. I am wondering if its a simple graphics card RAM problem, rather than a processor speed issue. I may update to a new card that's a bit faster, but with much more RAM. Same goes for my workstation I think.
