well I didn't edit any xml files. Today I deleted the whole public instance (after backing it up) and pasted the public instance from a whole new downloaded magnolia instance. Then I pasted the repository from my backup into it and tried to start it. but unfortunately it didn't contain the projects from my author instance. I'm quite desperate now and tempted to ignore the public instance at all and work with the author instance only...
