It's looking like what I want to do can't be done right now. :-(

Hi Tam,

It can be done - but as others have said it takes a little bit of scripting.

I realize, from your earlier emails, you don't know how to write that script yourself, at the moment - but if you are interested I am sure one of us would be willing to walk you through the steps.

Opening different files is not that big a hurdle either, the script you have may have a problem with it...but I bet that can be fixed up also...

So - if your interested just respond back....

Drew

Thank you Drew -- I really appreciate that. The project I've selected is turning out to be a huge undertaking just from a design standpoint. I've been looking at how some other people have done it, and I think it can be improved. I'm beginning to think the scripting will be the easiest part. ;-)

I really don't want to be a pest on this list. I do pretty well with books. I know there are a lot of books out now about OOo, but are there any that deal specifically with Base, forms and/or writing macros? I'm afraid a general book on OOo won't be in depth enough?

Thanks for the help!

Pest? - please, that is the idea of this list and of the forums..

Thanks Drew -- that's very kind.

Document wise.
Look at Andrew Pitonyak's stuff - http://www.pitonyak.org/ you want to check out both his document on Macro's in general and his document on Base specifically.

I've looked at it before and didn't "get it." But now that I have a task in mind, it will probably make more sense. Thanks for the reminder.

The StarOffice 8 Basic Programmers Guide is also a must have - found on the SUN web site but I can't tell you where, I swear they keep moving it around...if you can't find it let me know I will email my copy - it's a pdf file.

I didn't even know about this one. I'll see if I can find it.

Commercially, there is a book about Base with a fair bit about scripting in the works. Last I heard the author was about finished and in the process of trying to find a publisher..not sure where he is at with that..might be a good time to drop him a line and inquire.

This sounds perfect. I'd be interested to know how it's going, too.

Other wise - please don't hesitate to ask here or at the forum..

Thanks, Drew

So - still need an example of working with the FilePicker control and opening files via a script?

Yes, please. :-)

This DB is all about document and image management. I need to be able to (1) scan it (with the default program) if that hasn't already been done (2) locate it in the directory after it's been scanned and attach the path to the appropriate record (3) open it with the default program after it's been attached to the appropriate record.

I did find a lot of information about this on the forums, but the solutions I found actually save the image within the database -- it would quickly become too large. Also, the format isn't consistent, i.e., there are .GIF, .JPG, .TIF, .PDF, .TXT and other document formats involved.

There are a couple of genealogy research log programs that do what I'm trying to do, but there are limitations to all of them. With one, you can scan image files when you first source them, but dealing with PDFs is clunky and you can't attach a .TXT file or other document format. Another one allows you to link a document or image, but then retrieving it from the record it relates to is difficult.

I certainly don't expect you to solve all these problems for me. I just thought it might help if you knew what I was trying to accomplish. :-)

Thanks!
