It's looking like what I want to do can't be done right now. :-(

Hi Tam,

It can be done - but as others have said it takes a little bit of scripting.

I realize, from your earlier emails, you don't know how to write that script yourself, at the moment - but if you are interested I am sure one of us would be willing to walk you through the steps.

Opening different files is not that big a hurdle either, the script you have may have a problem with it...but I bet that can be fixed up also...

So - if your interested just respond back....

Drew

Thank you Drew -- I really appreciate that. The project I've selected is turning out to be a huge undertaking just from a design standpoint. I've been looking at how some other people have done it, and I think it can be improved. I'm beginning to think the scripting will be the easiest part. ;-)

I really don't want to be a pest on this list. I do pretty well with books. I know there are a lot of books out now about OOo, but are there any that deal specifically with Base, forms and/or writing macros? I'm afraid a general book on OOo won't be in depth enough?

Thanks for the help!

Pest? - please, that is the idea of this list and of the forums..

Document wise.
Look at Andrew Pitonyak's stuff - http://www.pitonyak.org/ you want to check out both his document on Macro's in general and his document on Base specifically. The StarOffice 8 Basic Programmers Guide is also a must have - found on the SUN web site but I can't tell you where, I swear they keep moving it around...if you can't find it let me know I will email my copy - it's a pdf file. Commercially, there is a book about Base with a fair bit about scripting in the works. Last I heard the author was about finished and in the process of trying to find a publisher..not sure where he is at with that..might be a good time to drop him a line and inquire.

Other wise - please don't hesitate to ask here or at the forum..

So - still need an example of working with the FilePicker control and opening files via a script?

Drew

I'm back working on this after taking a break for a few weeks to deal with real life -- egads that gets in the way. ;-)

I've made a lot of progress over the last week and I'm thinking I'm just about ready to actually USE this database with the exception of just a couple of hurdles -- the File Selection being one of them. I've adjusted my expectations a bit to make the implementation easier and more practical -- and am still happy with the results.

What I have so far is (1) a field (LocalPath) for the local path of my document, image, etc., (2) a button that opens it in FireFox (this works fine for my needs and avoids the default program issue for JPGs and PDFs, etc.) and (3) a File Selection control. What I've been doing to test the macro (big thanks to Steveeh131047 on the OOoForum who posted it, if you're here!) is to use the File Selection field to find the file, and then I've been copying and pasting the resulting path into my LocalPath field.

Drew, if you sent or posted something about how to use the FilePicker control and open the files with a script, I missed it! I'm sorry! Is this something you can still help me with?

Thanks!
