This DB is all about document and image management. I need to be able to (1) scan it (with the default program) if that hasn't already been done (2) locate it in the directory after it's been scanned and attach the path to the appropriate record (3) open it with the default program after it's been attached to the appropriate record.

I did find a lot of information about this on the forums, but the solutions I found actually save the image within the database -- it would quickly become too large. Also, the format isn't consistent, i.e., there are .GIF, .JPG, .TIF, .PDF, .TXT and other document formats involved.

There are a couple of genealogy research log programs that do what I'm trying to do, but there are limitations to all of them. With one, you can scan image files when you first source them, but dealing with PDFs is clunky and you can't attach a .TXT file or other document format. Another one allows you to link a document or image, but then retrieving it from the record it relates to is difficult.

hmm - If this is a Genealogy related database you might be interested to know that there is another person working on the same type of Base project. If your interested I can ask him if it is ok to pass along his email address to you and maybe you could help each other out. He is a nice fellow actually living in New Zealand, let me know if your interested.

Otherwise I'll try to have a little something for you tomorrow example wise. Most likely a link here to a post on the forum, where I can place a file for you to download.
