Dear all,
First - this may be more appropriate for the general OO user help forum but as
Drew has already dealt with similar issues I wanted to post here first....and
sorry for such a long email but here goes:
I work surveying mammals with "camera traps" which take photos of variety of species of animals. I have a few thousand photos which can be up to 1.5 MB each. I would like to be able to "develop" (for me this means more adapt what has already been achieved by far cleverer people) an "application" (for me something where I can click a few buttons on a nice GUI and maybe share with friends) which enables me to manage these images. Specifically: 1) use base to store photo metadata such as image size, when taken, where taken, species recorded, plus location where photo is stored on the server (reality my laptop so nothing clever needed here but would like to leave door open for future developments online access etc) - from some fairly hasty google searches it seems best to not store the image but rather the file location for the image (I use windows vista please don't hold it against me). Q1 - is storing the file location possible in Base? 2) Create forms to make entering the data "easy" - Q2 = how do I tell a Base form field is a file location for an image? I will want to be able to use this field to produce a report with the pretty pictures (I have OO 3.0.0, with sun report builder 1.0.5 - so think I can handle this from Drews' earlier postings - see below) 3) Be able to compare photos side by side and update the Base metadata. E.g. I want to be able to compare photos of different jaguars to see if they are the same or not. So I would need to be able to see 2 photos side by side and have some sort of form entry capability so I update the Base field with a code which identifies the individuals. Q3 - how simple is it to combine functionality of Base and draw /impress (not really sure which is best suited or might need parts of both)? As I would like to be able to zoom into the photos, scroll up and down, scroll to the next field (windows should be independent) , adjust contrast, update fields without switching between applications etc 4) Q4 - How do I wrap all this in a user friendly frontend / GUI? This is last on my list as if you can help me to manage the first 3 points I can then worry about this. A very similar application has been produced with Access and VBA (www.atrium-biodiversity.org/tools/camerabase) but I want something that is opensource and freely available (I don't have Access so it doesn't work for me and I don't think I can get at the VBA). Many thanks for any suggestions and guidance. I have no Java / Python / PHP experience (but some experience with SQL and stored procedures) but I think all this is possible? but really need tips, links to useful references, and if at all possible a helping hand to get started and guide me through.
Many thanks,
Darren

An interesting application. "Camera Base is licensed under the GNU General Public License version 3". The VBA is not protected because of this. It utilizes several other open source software programs. It has clean user interface, nothing fancy, but well done for usability. Code appears to be quite readable for the non "hardcore naming coders". Most of the code could probably be ported to StarBasic/OOo without too much effort. Whether Base could provide all the functionality, I do not know; I have not worked that much it Base. I use Access97 at work, but code is not one of my strengths.
