What about a monitor with a greater resolution? And rather than stretch to fit, just go with an image that doesn't completely fill the screen. I feel the odd resolution is probably simply down to the size and shape they built the laptop to. Wide as the keyboard, highest resolution they could, and keeping the laptop smaller instead of taller.
