Still, the latest MS .docs are XML and therefore should be relatively easy to support with any Word Processor.

While on the one hand, it is true that MS's XML doc files would be *technically* easier to support, they are doing everything in their power to make it *legally* impossible to do so. At least if you aren't willing to pay licensing fees for the privilege.
